Can you find the errors? Pt. 1

Test your skills and take a look at these sample pattern sections and see if you can find every error. Every sample will have errors that are either technical errors, style errors/suggestions, or both!

SAMPLE #1

Using 2.5mm needles, cast on 24, 26, 28. 30 sts.

Row 1 - *k2, p2* across.

Number of errors: 2

Sample #1 Answers:

#1 - After 28, there should be a comma, not a period.

#2 - Row 1 is a 4-stitch repeat. 26 and 30 are not divisible by 4.

SAMPLE #2

Round 1 - Knit

Round 2 - purl

Round 3 - *K1, p1* across

Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until you have 14 rounds.

Number of errors: 3

Sample #2 Answers:

#1 - 'Purl' should be capitalized in Round 2.

#2 - Repeat instruction should be 'repeat rounds' not 'repeat rows'.

#3 - Clarification - Until you have 14 rounds total including Round 1, or until you have repeat those two rounds 14 times? Maybe say to repeat the two rounds 7 times.

SAMPLE #3

Knit four rows in stockinette stitch.

Follow the chart until all rows have been worked. Repeat rows 1-5 of the chart once more.

Change to smaller needles and work row 6 of the chart.

Knit 4 rows in stockinette stitch.

Number of errors: 1

Sample #3 Answer:

Consistency issue: "knit four rows" or "knit 4 rows."

Instructions need to be consistent in style and phrasing.

SAMPLE #4

Materials Needed:

US 8 (5.0 mm) needles

US 6 (3.75 mm) needles

4 stitch markers

Instruction:

Using the larger US 8 / 5.0 mm needles, cast on 53 stitches.

Row 1 (WS): Purl across.

Row 2 (RS): Sl1, *p2, k1*

Row 3 and all odd rows: Sl1, purl across.

Repeat Rows 2 & 3 for a total of 13 rows.

Place markers:

K13, pm, k13, pm, k13, pm, k13.

Number of errors: 5

Sample #4 Answer:

#1 - Needle sizes - US 6 actually converts to 4.0 mm, not 3.75 mm.

#2 - Formatting: The way you list needles should be consistent - use either parenthesis or a slash mark, but not both.

#3 - Repeat rows 2 & 3 - the repeat is over two rows, therefore it should have an even number when finished.

#4 - Since there is a repeat going on, it's unnecessary to have "and all odd rows" in Row 3. You can always add it later when there isn't a repeat instruction.

#5 - Dividing stitches with markers - 13 x 4 is 52, but the cast on number was 53.

Bonus #6 - It's hard to say since the whole pattern isn't present, but the materials list says we needed 4 markers, and so far we have only used 3. Be sure to read through the whole pattern and make sure the quantity of stitch markers is correct!

Well, how did you do? Did you find all the errors and suggestions?

If you did, then well done! If you didn't, that's okay!

It's easier to find mistakes in other peoples work, where as your own work is much harder. Your brain thinks you have everything right, so even if there are mistakes, you might easily miss them. Always ensure your work is double checked with a tech editor!
