Organizing your yarn stash

One of the best recommendations I can make is to organize your yarn stash! It may be a lot of upfront work to get it started, but it is so worth it.
If you're like me, you have a huge yarn stash. If you're also like me, it's all stuffed into one big bin. That means it's hard to see what you have, and every time you want to start a project you have to dump it all out and see what you got. I've got a better solution.
SPREADSHEETS
Personally, I am huge excel girl. I love working in excel and I think it's an excellent tool! That's how I organize my yarn. I have a few different columns that help me keep things organized and let me filter options based on what I am looking for.
I have a column for yarn brand, yarn colorway, yarn fiber content, a column each for how much yards and how many grams are in a skein when purchased, yarn weight, and columns for how many yards and grams remain in a used skein. Then I can filter each of these, whether I am looking for yarn with the most remaining yards or what yarn weight I need. I even have some boxes that do the math for you to see how much yarn is remaining in a skein. All you need is your yarn and a kitchen scale to weigh your yarn on. Instructions are included in the spreadsheet, but if you have any questions please reach out! You can create a copy of my google spreadsheet to use for your own personal stash by clicking this link.
RAVELRY STASH
But I know a lot of people aren't as in love with spreadsheets as I am, so you may want to check out Ravelry's stash feature! You input your yarn information, and it links it to the yarn brand on Ravelry, where available. You can then search your specific yarn and see what other people on Ravelry have made from it. This is very nice if you are looking for inspiration or want to see what your colorway looks like when it's been knit up.
MOBILE APPS
And if you don't have Ravelry, I'm sure there are various apps in android/iphone stores that you can track your stash in! I haven't found any yet, but as I hear of any good apps I will add them in a list below. If you have an app you love to use, let me know!
