FO Friday - Illusion Socks
Updated: Aug 29
Yep, I hopped on the illusion trend! I jumped right into it without even knowing how it works. I figured I would learn as I went. Turned out alright!
WHAT IS ILLUSION KNITTING?
It's a really cool technique that uses purl bumps strategically, so when looked at from an angle, an image appears. But when looked at from above, it looks just like stripes!
WHAT I DID
I wanted to try and do a simple checkered look. I think it's close, but it's not perfect. Probably because I didn't actually look up the precision math and techniques of this kind of design, and just went with what I thought felt right.
After a section of yellow and purple squares, I did a plain row of knitting. What I probably should have done was just start the next square immediately - and that would have put a row of purple purl bumps (say that 10 times fast!) and a row of yellow purl bumps right next to each other. But for my first attempt and winging it, it turned out okay!

THE NEXT PAIR
Oh yeah, there will be a next pair for sure! I'm thinking a monochrome color scheme, like a bright and dark green. This pair was so contrasting, I wanted something that would also be more matching and have a calmer feel.
I will also not do that extra row of plain knitting between the color changes with the purl bumps. So after I finish my row of purple purls, I'll go right into the yellow. If you've done illusion knitting, I'm sure that will make sense to you.

WILL THERE BE A PATTERN?
Heck yeah! I am aiming for testing to open November 1st. It would be sooner, but I have a Christmas pattern I want to have tested before then, and I want to give myself plenty of time to make my new pair and refine the pattern into something I like. So watch for the test invite by November and pattern release shortly after that!
