Tips for knitting on the go
Whether you're knitting on a plane, in a car, at a cafe, these tips will all be helpful to make sure you are prepared and able to knit during your travels.
PREPARE FOR TRAVEL
You don't want to start your trip and realize you forgot something important, something you absolutely need to even knit the pattern. Make sure your pattern is printed out or saved to your phone. Wind up all your yarn, and make sure you have more than you think you need. You don't want to run out of yarn! Do your gauge swatch before you leave, making sure you know exactly what needles you need before you depart.
PICK A SMALLER PROJECT
Especially if you're flying on a plane, you want to make sure you have enough room to work on your project. Sweaters are usually too big, scarfs are debatable. Perfect projects would be socks, hats, bandanas, and other smaller items like that. This can also be fun if you finish your item during traveling, you can say you made it in another state or country! Choose a project that isn't too complicated. That way it feels more enjoyable, and you don't need to worry too much about mistakes.
PACK YOUR TOOLS
Read through your pattern and see what tools you need to complete the project. Does it require any unusual items or tools you don't normally use? One thing you may consider is bringing circular needles as opposed to straight needles or DPNS. Circulars are not as easy to drop and lose on the floor, never to be seen again.
Check your pattern materials and make sure you include everything on the list, as well as anything else you may need, such as:
Tapestry needle
Tape measure
Removable stitch markers
Scissors
Hand lotion
Neck light
Row counter
Crochet hook for quick fixes
FLYING ON A PLANE?
If you have wooden needles, opt for those. If you only have metal needles, you may consider starting your knitting project before you head out. This way it's obvious they are knitting needles. Instead of scissors, bring fingernail clippers! Don't bring any of your favorite or treasured notions/tools with you. Everything has potential to be confiscated, and you certainly wouldn't want to accidentally lose them on your trip.
OTHER IMPORTANT TIPS
Make sure you have your favorite podcasts or music downloaded before you leave. Pack some snacks, and of course water! Be sure to take breaks every now and then to rest your hands and relax your eyes.
CHECK LOCAL SHOPS
One thing I love to do when I travel, is buy yarn as a souvenir! Check online and find a shop or two that sells local yarns, and go purchase a locally dyed yarn. It's always fun to find new yarns that you don't have access to, whether that dyer isn't online or it's a specialty in-house only yarn. Plus you can brag to your friends that you bought your yarn from another country!
